A guide to Digital Product Passport (DPP).

What is DPP?

According to new EU legislation, products sold or manufactured within the EU must be equipped with a QR code, RFID tag, or chip. This code provides access to information about the product's origin, environmental impact, service history, manuals, and more - all to promote sustainable choices.

Why is DPP being introduced?

On 2 May 2023, the European Commission adopted a proposal aimed at increasing transparency in the production chain. By making the product's journey visible, consumers and companies will be able to choose more sustainably - and manufacturers will be motivated to improve their production.

When does the DPP need to be in place?

The implementation will take place gradually depending on the product category. Battery manufacturers are the first ones. However, by the year 2030, all companies must comply with the law. Starting early reduces the risk of costly delays.

What happens if the requirements are not met?

Companies that do not meet the DPP requirements risk fines equivalent to 4-6% of their turnover - in line with GDPR sanctions. The exact amount depends on several factors.

How can DPP become a competitive advantage?

Today's consumers demand transparency and sustainability - offering products with DPP strengthens your brand and provides clear added value. Investing in a modern PIM system is a strategic investment to streamline product information and enable scalable sales.

4 steps to get started:

Map origin and production.

Identify where all components and raw materials come from - all the way to the raw material. The better understanding of origin and manufacturing methods, the easier it is to meet the DPP requirements.

Identify and secure data sources.

Map out which actors have relevant data and how you can access it. Seek legal expertise to ensure that you collect the right information according to legal requirements.

Establish efficient data collection flows.

Create effective routines for collecting data on origin, environmental impact, repairs, etc. Collaborate with suppliers and customers - you have a common interest in efficient processes.

Optimize your system for product information.

Adapt existing PIM systems or invest in new solutions that meet the DPP requirements. Regardless of digital maturity, a new way of managing product data is required.
